DJing for a Friend

Stefano Vrolijk from Luciana Paz on Vimeo.

Stefano Vrolijk (23) is a junior at the University of Tampa, majoring in International Business and Management. Vrolijk is from Cuernavaca, Mexico where his interests for DJing began.  After school, he bikes home, connects his laptops and DJ controllers in his living room, throws on his headphones and simply starts to feel the beats at every sound wave that is displayed on his screen.

His inspiration came from his lifetime school friend Alfredo (23) also known as “El Matus,” a well known DJ in Cuernavaca.  Matus unfortunately, passed away from a gunshot on his chest at a nightclub last year, trying to defend a woman. This was devastating for Vrolijk and his friends, as Matus had been a long time friend and brother.

Vrolijk remembers that he would accompany Matus in his DJ performances. A month before Matus’ shooting, Vrolijk would receive DJ lesson from Matus through Facetime. He would recommend DJ controllers, soundtracks, general tips about DJing but most importantly slowly sparked Vrolijks appreciation for creating music.

Vrolijk explains that he would only go watch Matus play for fun back when he was in Cuernavaca, until he realized he wanted to learn from him. His goal was to play alongside Matus; however, his vision has changed. Now Vrolijk wants to become a good DJ through further practice and eventually go back to where Matus played his music to honor his memory, his talent, and his friendship.
